"Too Young to Die." (2001)

Last month, the artist Yoshitomo Nara, who recently joined the Pace Gallery in New York, discovered that two works that appear in his catalogue raisonné, Yoshitomo Nara Complete Works 1984–2010, are forgeries.

Art in America has the story. Mr. Nara “casually announced” the news to his fans in Japanese over Twitter as soon as he discovered the error.

“…I have been looking through my Catalogue Raisonné! … drawing #203 and 204 are forgeries… sorry to tell you after they are already released,” he said.

The book is published by Chronicle Books in the U.S. and Bijutsu Shuppan-Sha in Japan. Following Mr. Nara’s Tweets, the publishers said in a press release, “Upon receiving this news, we requested the firm confirmation about this statement to the author himself, as well as to the persons/parties on this. We regret to announce that the author’s statement was true to the fact.”

Mr. Nara was himself a part of the review process for the catalogue raisonné and seemed to brush off the mix-up, encouraging his Twitter followers to buy first editions.
