Rick Santorum won the Colorado Republican caucus giving him the hat trick with wins in all three of tonight’s primary votes. Colorado GOP Chairman Ryan Call declared Mr. Santorum the winner in the caucus after a tight race with frontrunner Mitt Romney that stretched from Tuesday night into the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

Mr. Romney went into tonight’s trio of primaries in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri conceding the possibility he might take some losses, but Colorado was seen as his best chance for a win and he focused most of his efforts in the past day on that state. Despite his loss in Colorado, Mr. Romney’s early victories and his favorable poll numbers in several upcoming states mean he’s still favored to win the Republican nomination, but his campaign has clearly lost the aura of inevitability it took on following huge fundraising totals and back-to-back victories in Florida and Nevada.

Mr. Santorum hasn’t had a primary win since his narrow victory in the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucus last month. His resurgence is bad news for Newt Gingrich, who went from being seen as the main conservative alternative to Mr. Romney to fighting to stay out of fourth place.
