Senate observes moment of silence for Whitney Houston

Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3), West Deptford, called for a moment of silence this afternoon for Newark native Whitney Houston, the international singing star who died Saturday.

Sen. Ray Lesniak (D-20), Elizabeth, eulogized Ms. Houston from the Senate floor.

“I was in Tampa in 1991 for the Super Bowl,” he said. “Operation Desert Storm had just begun and there was tension in the air. Then Whitney Houston came out and sang our National Anthem. I will think of that moment always. …May God grant her the happiness she couldn’t find here on earth.”
