Senate passes marriage equality, 24-16

TRENTON – State Sen. Jennifer Beck (R-11) and Sen. Diane Allen (R-7) crossed the aisle to vote in favor of same-sex marriage this afternoon.

“Our republic is guaranteed to protect liberty for all of the people that live in our state,” said the Republican, re-routed last year by redistricting into heavily gay Asbury Park.

The bill passed, 24-16, and appears destined for a veto by Gov. Chris Christie.

Sen. President Steve Sweeney, (D-3); state Sen. Paul Sarlo, (D-36); and Sen. Jim Beach, (D-6) all voted yes this time rather than repeating their 2009 abstentions, same as Allen.

Senators Nick Sacco, (D-32); Shirley Turner, (D-15); and Fred Madden, (D-4) changed their 2009 votes from no to yes, just like Beck.
