Mildred and Richard Loving were a mixed-race couple in Virginia at a time when interracial coupling was against Virginia’s anti-miscegenation laws. Their subsequent trials sound like the sort of thing you’d read about in histories of the antebellum South—but happened quite recently, at the height of the Civil Rights era. This Valentine’s Day, HBO is airing a new documentary about the ensuing court cases—which ended with the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Loving v. Virginia. It’s a fascinating, intermittently terrifying story.
