Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney cruised to an easy win in the Illinois primary tonight, besting former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum by 12 points with approximately 90 percent of precincts reporting.
In a spirited speech to his supporters, Mr. Romney largely ignored his rivals, taking the fight directly to the man he hopes to face in November: Barack Obama.
“For 25 years, I lived and breathed jobs, business, and the economy,” Mr. Romney said. “I had successes and failures but each step of the way, I learned a little more about what it is that makes our American system so powerful. You can’t learn that teaching Constitutional law. You can’t learn that as a community organizer. The simple truth is that this President just doesn’t understand the genius of America’s economy – or the secret of our success.”
Mr. Romney was always thought to win Illinois, but some late polls suggested that Mr. Santorum was closing in.
