Hudson County Democratic Organization Chaiman Mark Smith today reiterated his commitment to state Sen. Nia Gill (D-34) for the vacant 10th Congressional seat.
There’s been some push-back from Essex County, which owns the lion’s share of the Tenth. Smith said it’s all been cordial, none of it nasty.
But he stands by Gill despite Essex efforts to get him to back Newark Council President Donald Payne, Jr.
“From the Essex side they have been lobbying for ther candidate but I made a commitment to Nia Gill,” said Smith. “I shook her hand. While negotiations have been very cordial, I made a commitment to an African American woman candidate that is in the best interest of the Hudson County portion of the Tenth District.”
