State Senator Adriano Espaillat continued his media tour this morning, appearing on “Good Day New York” and the hosts pressed him on why, since demographics are not a factor, he is challenging Charlie Rangel for Congress.
In response, the Washington Heights lawmaker tied Mr. Rangel to Congress failure to pass the DREAM Act, which would have allowed undocumented immigrants to become legal if they attend college or serve in the military.
“When I get to Congress I will make sure that the DREAM Act is my first priority,” he said. “I did it in Albany. I sponsored legislation that allowed students to have access to higher education.”
He then went on to suggest that after a long career in Washington, Charlie Rangel was living in an “ivory tower” and had forgotten the needs of the district.
“I think you need a voice to make sure the rest of the members understand what the needs of the district are. Sometimes you get up there and you see the district from an ivory tower and you forget what the issues on the ground are and that is what I want to bring to Congress.”
If he wins, Mr. Espaillat would be the first Dominican member of Congress, something he said would provide Dominicans with their “Jackie Robinson moment.”
