Helicopter sales don’t take off as expected

TRENTON – The amount of money the state hoped to make by selling State Police helicopters fell woefully short of the mark.

The state was anticipating a total of $14.1 million in the last two fiscal years from the sale of five Sikorsky helicopters and a Bell chopper.

However, plans to sell all the helicopters fell through.

Instead of $14.1 million, the state only saw $578,000 in FY11 and an estimated $4.511 million in the current fiscal year.

Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa told the Assembly Budget Committee on Monday that for fiscal year 2013, there is a stipulation that proceeds from the sale of the remaining helicopters will be deposited in the state general fund instead of the State Police’s spending plan.
