State provides update on Hagedorn closure

TRENTON – Human Services Commissioner Jennifer Velez said the Hagedorn Psychiatric Hospital in Hunterdon County will close on June 30.

She said the impact of the closure will affect some 200 employees, which is down from the original projection of 540 employees.

Appearing before the Assembly Budget Committee, Velez said employee services have been set up to help affected workers seek other opportunities.

The closure is part of a move to transfer patients from institutions into communities. Velez said the state plans to invest some $16 million toward this transition.

On a related note, the task force in charge of determining which developmental disability institutions should close is expected to come out with decisions in May. The task force was created as part of legislation sponsored by Sen. Jeff Van Drew, (D-1), of Dennis, whose district includes the Vineland Developmental Disabilities Center, a major employer in Cumberland County.
