The User Experience Awards has up to 25 awards to give out, but has received only one submission with two weeks left before the deadline, Betabeat has learned.
“We have a whopping ONE submission. We need submissions!” wrote organizer Beverly May, founder of Oxford Technology Ventures, in a plea sent to the event’s judges. “Can you please appeal to your network again to get their submissions in. Tell them there is a high likelihood they might win! (true).”
The awards honor excellence in user experience, the art of making an app usable, pleasurable and intuitive, which is often “miscategorized” as design, according to the creators of the UX Awards. The goal of the ceremony is to “raise the stature, understanding and awareness” of the importance of user experience.
The overall best example of user experience gets the Platinum-level grand prize, a glass award and $1,000. The number of Gold- and Silver-level winners, awarded in categories like mobile, tablet and games, is determined by the types of submissions received. Right now there is only one type of submission, because there has only been one submission. But there could be as many as 12 categories in which Gold-level winners receive glass awards and $250 gift cards. If the contest gets enough submissions, it may also award 12 plaques for Silver-level winners in all the categories.
The event was created by Oxford Technology Ventures in partnership with three user experience trade groups, and is sponsored by HUGE, Ogilvy, Parsons School of Design and others. The event, which includes an award ceremony and a panel discussion about the submissions and the decision-making process, will be on June 12. The deadline to submit is May 1.
Last year’s User Experience Awards sold out and awarded five prizes and two honorable mentions. This year there is expected to be at least one prize, because there has been one submission. Who entered this sole submission a full two weeks before the deadline? Overachiever.
