TRENTON – Some 8,000 people are on a waiting list to move from developmental disability centers or psychiatric hospitals into community homes, Human Services Commissioner Jennifer Velez said today in an appearance before the Assembly Budget Committee.
The community homes could be in the form of group homes, apartments, or other types of neighborhood settings.
There are seven developmental disability centers and five psychiatric hospitals in the state.
There are 532 people from psychiatric hospitals ready to transition into community homes, Velez said.
The state is trying to transition as many people as it can from institutions to residential housing, as part of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Olmstead decision.
