The Wendy Long campaign for U.S Senate announced today they have secured the endorsement of John Bolton, a former ambassador to the United Nations who remains a hero in Republican foreign policy circles.
“Wendy Long is superbly qualified to represent New York as a U.S. Senator and is the only candidate who can defeat Kirsten Gillibrand in November,” Mr. Bolton said. “Wendy is a fiscal conservative who understands the urgent need to cut taxes, cut spending, and reduce the size of our federal government so that businesses can grow, creating jobs and opportunity for all Americans. She also understands that a prime obligation of a U.S. Senator – particularly one from New York – is to defend the security and sovereignty of America, and that nothing, including political correctness, can stand in the way of that obligation. “
The endorsement comes on the heels of an endorsement by Rudy Giuliani of Bob Turner, a Republican congressman who is vying with Ms. Long for the Republican nomination.
Ms. Long however has been having something of a tough morning otherwise. Liz Benjamin posted an interview she did with Ms. Long in which she suggested that legalizing same-sex unions would create a slippery slope of people marrying just to get on the same health insurance, or for some other financial or administrative reason.
“And, in my own personal life for example, someone very dear to me, whom I love very much, my mother, who was dying of Lou Gehrig’s disease and was having terrible problems with health insurance. I loved her very much. I would have loved to have legally married her so that we could have cured a lot of her insurance problems,” Ms. Long said.
Replied Ms. Benjamin on her blog, “I understand Long’s argument from an intellectual standpoint, but it’s still probably going to strike some people as a little strange.”

Ambassador Bolton, who served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, said: “Wendy Long is superbly qualified to represent New York as a U.S. Senator and is the only candidate who can defeat Kirsten Gillibrand in November.” During the course of her career, Long has served on the staff of two U.S. Senators and clerked for both a U.S. Court of Appeals Judge and a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Long, a registered Republican, who faces two challengers in the June 26th GOP primary, has received the nomination of the New York Conservative Party and will be their standard-bearer in the November general election.
Ambassador Bolton said, “Today, I am proud to endorse Wendy Long for United States Senate. In an era when many candidates are lacking in the credentials needed for higher office, Wendy Long is superbly qualified to represent New York in the U.S. Senate. Wendy has served on the staff of two Senators and has also clerked for a Justice of the Supreme Court. She understands the workings of both the judicial and legislative branches of our government and has put that knowledge to work for the executive branch in her effort to ensure the Senate confirmation of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Sam Alito to the Supreme Court.
“When it comes to foreign policy, Wendy understands and embraces the concept of peace through strength. She understands that rogue nations like North Korea and Iran are threats to world peace and are not to be trusted. Wendy also shares my belief that Israel is our one true ally in the Middle East and that the United States must play a crucial role in the defense of its borders and its citizens.
“I urge all Republicans to join with me in supporting Wendy Long in the June 26 primary for U.S. Senate.”
Wendy Long said, “I thank Ambassador Bolton for his kind words and support. His service to our nation and his outspoken defense of its principles and values have inspired my campaign, and I shall rely upon his wisdom on national security, foreign policy and defense issues during the campaign and as a United States Senator.”
