Mitt Romney’s campaign team countered President Obama’s claims that the economy is steadily improving under his leadership by creating a chart to show just how awful things are. Mr. Romney’s chart, which is entitled “Building a Better America: The Middle Class Under Obama,” says zero net jobs have been added since the president entered the White House and 23 million Americans are “unemployed, underemployed  or have stopped looking for work.”

President Obama has characterized this election as a “make-or-break moment for the middle class” with him fighting to keep moving the economy forward and Mr. Romney fighting to take the country “back to the policies that created this mess in the first place.” Mr. Romney’s chart argues “under President Obama, America’s middle class has been pushed to the brink.”

The chart also highlights a quote from Mr. Obama in 2008 when he said “we measure progress” that occurred during the Clinton years based on the number of jobs created.

“Americans deserve better–much better,” the chart concludes.

Update (6:22 pm): The Obama campaign issued a response calling the chart a “misleading infographic.”
