The day after it launched its 27th issue with a beery party, Los Angeles-based GOOD magazine has laid off most of its editorial staff, reports Poynter. That includes executive editor Ann Friedman, senior editor Cord Jefferson, lifestyle editor Amanda Hess and associate editor Nona Willis Aronowitz.

The layoffs are surprising because GOOD never appeared to be a moneymaking project. Founded by Ben Goldhirsh, the son of the late Inc. founder Bernie, one of its early promotion tactics involved sending subscription payments to a charity of the subscriber's choosing. The company grew to include a marketing company, Good Corps, and Jumo, the non-profit social networking site. Maybe they don't plan on being a magazine anymore?

Happily, it appears Ms. Friedman, everyone's favorite real-talking editor (and one of what must be a small club of editors-in-chief who's ever tumbld a gif), isn't going to be selling out anytime soon.
