So you want to make a difference, but Occupy Wall Street isn’t what it used to be and the beaches are finally open and frankly your tan could use some work. Well, good news. You can help raise money to fight the spread of HIV when you stop off for coffee on the way to Coney Island.
Starting today, Foursquare is partnering with Starbucks to raise money for (RED)’s latest campaign against HIV/AIDS. How it works: Every time a user checks into a Starbucks between June 1 and 10, the company will donate a dollar to The Global Fund (which is where (RED)-raised money goes.) You’ll even get a hit of those sweet, sweet gamification endorphins, in the form of a special badge (visible at left.)
This specific initiative is part of (RED)’s “Rush to Zero” campaign, which aims to eliminate mother-to-child HIV transmission by 2015. Starbucks will donate up to $250,000. Also participating are Penfolds and Bugaboo, who’ve committed to donating when users check in to specific spots (Bonefish Grill in the former case, one of 25 retailers in the latter).
In terms of money donated, this will be Foursquare’s largest nonprofit check in effort to-date. We reached out to the Soho-based startup to find out why (RED) and got some email enlightenment from Ashley Simon, who manages Foursquare’s media partnerships. She explained, “We were inspired by the (RED) mission and have been talking to them for a while about partnering. The (RED)RUSH campaign is a perfect alignment of our missions. We’re extremely excited to give our community an opportunity to get involved in the fight against AIDS.”
She added that they hope to continue these types of partnerships.
