Higher ed. reorg bill to be heard by Assembly committee Monday

Despite threats from a faction of Assembly Democrats that they will withhold their support on the budget unless a controversial plan to reorganize higher education in the state is shelved pending further hearings, the bill is set to be heard in the Assembly Budget Committee on Monday.

On Thursday, a coalition led by Assemblyman Joe Cryan issued an ultimatum to Speaker Sheila Oliver, demanding that the reorganization bill be delayed in exchange for budget support. Without support from the nine, Democrats do not have the 41 votes necessary to pass the budget.

According to Cryan, Oliver was non-committal.
