The already-renewed HBO series The Newsroom is looking less like a sure thing already, despite its Aaron Sorkin/Jeff Daniels pedigree: Sunday’s episode, per Vulture, saw a 20% drop in all viewers and 30% drop in viewers under 50 from the premiere. As HBO sells itself as a portfolio of blue-chip quality programming, the immediate ratings do not matter. So long as the 1.7 million viewers who watched The Newsroom on Sunday night (and any more who jump on board for repeat airings or HBO Go viewings), HBO’s purported goal has been met. Still, surely executives at the network will hope that, given the failure of the show to attract positive buzz (a coin of the realm at HBO), the numbers will start moving in the other direction.
