Manny Tavarez Pens ‘Open Letter to Azi Paybarah’

ol Manny Tavarez Pens Open Letter to Azi PaybarahManny Tavarez, who’s running a bit of an uphill campaign against freshman State Senator Gustavo Rivera, appreciates attention in the press, but not all of it.

Notably, yesterday morning, Capital New York’s Azi Paybarah published campaign literature from Mr. Tavarez telling voters to vote for him in the Democratic primary on September 11th. However, as Mr. Paybarah pointed out, this might confuse some voters, as Election Day was moved to September 13th to avoid conflicting with the anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks. This was done several months ago.

This afternoon, he responded in an open letter.

“While I properly deserve a good ribbing for our campaign’s missteps, I want to encourage you to go beyond any surface topics and address the merits of my campaign,” Mr. Tavarez wrote in the letter, which seemed addressed to the media at large, not just Mr. Paybarah.

It’s worth mentioning that Mr. Paybarah–an Observer alum–did report that he reached out to Mr. Tavarez’s campaign 24 hours prior, and he was told he would hear back from the candidate himself, which apparently did not occur.

To conclude his letter, Mr. Tavarez cited the correct election date.

“I have received the support of families and business leaders in my community, and I am confident that on September 13 – Democratic Primary Election Day – my get-out-the-vote efforts will be demonstrated by a winning majority of voters electing me to office,” he prognosticated. “Thank you again for your attention to my campaign, and I welcome you and all of your colleagues in the media to spend a day with me on the campaign trail.”

Dear Mr. Paybarah:

Thank you for covering my Senatorial race as I challenge a freshman incumbent here in the Bronx.

I do appreciate your journalistic integrity. The press shouldn’t be cheerleaders, and as the “Fourth Estate” you do have a responsibility to not only point out the flaws, but to also critically analyze and compare the positions of candidates for the same public office.

While I properly deserve a good ribbing for our campaign’s missteps, I want to encourage you to go beyond any surface topics and address the merits of my campaign.

Every day I am greeted by people in this district who want change. They continue to encourage me to build a strong foundation of trust with the voters, and I am!

The people who live and work in my district deserve job opportunities, affordable housing, quality education, adequate medical care, and programs for our senior citizens. The violence in our community needs to be replaced with opportunities for our youth.

The families in my district deserve to have the lives of their children welcome as treasures and not seen as a burden to the rest of the State.

I have been endorsed by Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz, a great leader who sticks to his principles in the face of any criticism. I have received the support of families and business leaders in my community, and I am confident that on September 13 – Democratic Primary Election Day – my get-out-the-vote efforts will be demonstrated by a winning majority of voters electing me to office.

Thank you again for your attention to my campaign, and I welcome you and all of your colleagues in the media to spend a day with me on the campaign trail.

Sincerely,
Manny Tavarez
