Weekly Advance: Week of Aug. 13

TRENTON – Will Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney tap Gov. Chris Christie for VP?

We don’t know.

But since the governor is expected to be on vacation next week with – as of late this week – no public schedule pending, it’s a question reporters won’t have an opportunity to ask Christie – again, and again, and again.

Vacation for the governor also means Democratic lawmakers will go another week without being told to “get the hell off the beach” and come back to Trenton to pass a tax relief plan. According to officials, Christie is taking the week off from his recent tours of stumping for Romney or visiting the Jersey shore for his summer beach town halls.

However, some lawmakers will be on the beach Monday, or at least right near it.

The Senate and Assembly environment committees are slated to hold a joint hearing in Ocean County to hear testimony regarding the impact that recycling and disposal of plastic bags and other floatables has on New Jersey’s waterways and sea life.

The 10 a.m. joint hearing in Lavallette is one of the only calendar events for state lawmakers next week.

So unless Romney ultimately picks up the phone and dials New Jersey, expect a slow week at the Statehouse.
