Oliver does not want the state’s colleges and universities to “wither”

NEW BRUNSWICK – When it came to expressing support for the $750 million bond referendum that residents will vote on, on Nov. 6, Speaker Shelia Oliver (D-34) of East Orange, quoted Columbia University President Lee Bollinger.

“Without new space, universities wither,” Oliver quoted. “They don’t die but they become less than they could be.”

Thus, if Rutgers University hopes to live up to its mantra of “Jersey Roots, Global Reach” having the best possible facilities is imperative.”

She made clear the bond referendum is not just about helping students master subject material; it’s much broader.

“It’s about the future of New Jersey and about the quality of life for its people,” she said at a rally Monday at Rutgers University’s College Avenue campus.

Ultimately, she said it’s about having the most well-rounded human beings.

“I want to encourage everyone to pass the message along.”
