The New York Times sure chose a hell of a time for a workplace satisfaction survey. The online form annual exercise that was sent out at the beginning of November is due tomorrow, a Times tipster tells us.

But a lot has happened in the past month at the paper that could color the survey results. The new Times contract, which was passed by the newspaper guild last week, has not produced widespread joy and enthusiasm in the newsroom. And questions continue to swirl around former BBC director and new Times CEO Mark Thompson.

The survey asks Times staffers to rate how strongly they agree or disagree with standard HR questions--how they get along with their managers, how committed they are to the Times versus past employers, how well the company innovated.

Staffers often ignore the survey, our source tells us, since they generally just result in a rah-rah note from management about the percentage of staffers who love their jobs (and, to be fair, who has time for that when you are on deadline). But this year, dissatisfied guild members are circulating emails to urge staffers to fill out the surveys and use the comment box to tell management how they really feel, in the hopes that it will reach publisher Arthur Sulzberger.

We suppose you should never ask a question if you don't want to know the answer.
