Amid constant rumors about random pairs of major publishers merging, we’ve never felt more confused about the state of the industry. Tonight’s panel discussion at the Center for Jewish History won’t shed much new light on the matter, but at least it will remind us of the industry’s glorious history. Panelists are to include Jonathan Karp of Simon & Schuster, new-media doyenne and former HarperCollins honcho Jane Friedman, and New York Review of Books co-founder Jason Epstein. They are slated to explain how Jewish editors and publishers were responsible for the late-20th-century transformation of the industry from somnolent to exciting and tumultuous.
