Gov. Chris Christie plans to forego the use of matching funds for the gubernatorial primary, a source close to the governor said today.
The source said so far the decision only pertains to the primary.
As of earlier this year, the governor had already raised $2.1 million for his war chest and has already planned at least one more fundraiser.
In the primary, the governor could have counted on a maximum of $5.6 million to spend, but with his decision he will likely amass far more than that before the June election. it’s widely anticipated that Christie will also choose to forego the funds in the general election when he is expected to have upwards of $40 million at his disposal. The cap for the general election is $12.9 million
The source also confirmed that Christie is planning a West Coast fundraising swing, including a stop in L.A. where the governor with the growing rolodex of Hollywood supporters hopes Director Steven Spielberg will be a headliner.
Late last year, the mega-director and longtime Democrat called Christie his “hero” in an intreview with the Hollywood Reporter.
