NORTHFIELD – Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) defended his party leadership’s decision to allow gubernatorial candidate state Sen. Barbara Buono (D-18) to deliver the Democrats’ budget rebuttal as a solo act.
“She’s our gubernatorial candidate,” Sweeney told PolitickerNJ.com. “She asked to do the address. It was an opportunity for her to respond.
“I’m going to do what it takes for her to be successful,” Sweeney added of the Democrats’ gubernatorial candidate, who lags far behind incumbent Gov. Chris Christie in the polls. “The Democrats in our house would have stood there with her. But this was her time to deliver the party’s message and I thought she did a great job delivering it.”
