TRENTON – Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) confirmed he met with Rutgers University President Robert Barchi-on Friday afternoon–and not much else.
He declined to reveal any details regarding his talk with the embattled head of the state’s largest public university.
“This afternoon, I met with President Barchi to discuss the current state of affairs at Rutgers University, particularly with the school’s athletic department,” Sweeney said in a statement. “As has always been my policy, I do not discuss private conversations. That being said, President Barchi and I engaged in a good conversation and I appreciated his candor.”
Some peple have called on Barchi to step down given the recent controversy of the school’s athletic department, and its recent hire of Julie Hermann as athletic director, whom former students have accused of mental cruelty, among other things.
Gov. Chris Christie said he would not tell Rutgers what to do, saying it’s their call. He is opposed to having Barchi step down, given Barchi’s involvement in the medical school merger.
