Teens are flocking to Twitter, Instagram and other sites because its main rival, Facebook, is increasingly becoming DRAMA CENTRAL and they’re SICK OF IT (slams door). A study from the Pew Research Center found that teens are seeking safe havens on other social networks because their parents are ruining the serene Facebook experience by complaining about Uncle John’s heart condition.
Many of the 800 teens surveyed said they love chilling on Instagram and Twitter because their parents aren’t on there to embarrass them and ruin their lives:
“The key is that there are fewer adults, fewer parents and just simply less complexity and less drama,” said Amanda Lenhart of the Pew Research Center, one of the study’s authors. “They still have their Facebook profiles, but they spend less time on them and move to places like Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr.”
Despite that, Facebook is still the Taylor Swift to Twitter’s Demi Lovato. More than 24 percent have accounts on Twitter— a figure that’s doubled since 2011– but nearly 95 percent of kids have profiles on Facebook. And to add to the dramz, 70 percent of them are friends with their parents on Facebook, and another 76 percent said they’re friends with their siblings
Perhaps the most disturbing part of this three month survey is that 56 percent said it’s “not difficult at all” to manage their Facebook privacy settings.
Oh god, we really are getting old.
