To Do Friday: Literary Circus

Ayad Akhtar

Ayad Akhtar.

Have fun under a literary big top and listen to readings by New York Times best-selling author and National Book Award finalist Téa Obreht (The Tiger’s Wife), Jason Porter (his book Why Are You So Sad? comes out in 2014) and Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar, who wrote American Dervish, at H.I.P. Reading Series’s “Circus Edition.” Launched in March 2012, H.I.P. is a quarterly reading series hosted by Erin Harris, Brittney Inman and Kim Perel (its name is an acronym of the founders’ surnames). There will also be literary sideshows by Stonecutter Journal, Gigantic Magazine and Slice Magazine, live blues music by Pork Chop Willie, a raffle to benefit The Center for Strategic Art and Agriculture, and “circus-related prizes.” Fire up the cotton candy machine.

The Paper Box, 17 Meadow Street, Brooklyn, (718) 383-3815, 7:30pm-late, tickets $5.
