If you haven’t been to the infamous annual Mermaid Parade in Coney Island, this is your chance. Over 1,500 crazy floats, marchers in over-the-top costumes and, yes, “mermaids” command Surf Avenue and the Coney Island boardwalk at the largest art parade in the nation, inspired by both ancient mythology and honky-tonk rituals. Founded in 1983, the outdoor festival features junk food, antique and muscle cars and live music, and it is especially poignant this year, post-Hurricane Sandy damage, as the procession was funded by a Kickstarter campaign. Judah Friedlander will be King Neptune and Real Housewife Carole Radziwill is the Queen Mermaid.
Surf Avenue, Coney Island, Brooklyn, 1-3pm.
