PolitickerNJ.com’s Special Election Guide; The Candidates, Part Six of Six: Alieta Eck

Title: Republican U.S. Senate candidate and Medical Doctor

Campaign Message: I will go to Washington, D.C. and undo Obamacare.

Campaign Update: A Somerset County doctor tired of the bureaucratic burdens of Democratic Party initiatives, Eck looked like roadkill last Thursday afternoon in the glare of a campaign-seasoned Steve Lonegan taking all the oxygen out of the Republican Primary. Then the Lonegan Campaign issued a dumb tweet widely derided as racist and Lonegan acted like the victim in a follow-up press conference. The Eck Campaign came out swinging, attempting to use the former Bogota mayor’s fumble as a way to get traction ahead of tomorrow’s election.

Campaign Spin: Those pockets of Tea Party support unhappy with Lonegan will coalesce around Eck and – assisted by fallout from the tweet debacle – propel her to victory tomorrow.

The Reality: Lonegan has deep and longstanding support structures whose allies will absorb a campaign mistake on the strength of Lonegan’s consistency in championing their issues.

Prognosis: It’s tough to win a short runway statewide campaign without name ID.
