The race for public advocate continued to heat up today, with Councilwoman Tish James releasing a blistering “fact check” email against rival State Senator Dan Squadron for his new “results”-themed campaign commercial.
The Squadron ad, released yesterday, features a glowing endorsement from Senator Chuck Schumer, including a reference to his leadership on gun control issues. The James camp, needless to say, disagreed with the assessment.
“As an Albany legislator, Squadron has NEVER passed even a single piece of gun legislation into law,” Ms. James press secretary Pat Barrientos charged in the missive. “In fact, over the past two years as a failed Albany politician, Squadron has passed a total of zero (0) bills into law.”
“New Yorkers deserve a Public Advocate who has the experience and ability to deliver results for working people,” Mr. Barrientos added. “Not another Albany politician preening his feathers.”
The Squadron campaign, however, fired back with a few big “fact checks” of their own.
“The James campaign is 100% wrong on the facts,” Squadron spokeswoman Amy Spitalnick said in a statement. “Chuck Schumer, advocates, and New Yorkers across the state agree: Daniel Squadron has been a leader who’s gotten results combating gun violence and improving the lives of families, kids, and seniors.”
Ms. Spitalnick further pointed to three bills her boss had passed over the past two years–not always an easy task for a Democrat in the Republican-controlled State Senate–and provided a statement from Leah Gunn-Barrett, the executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence: “NYAGV has worked with Daniel Squadron on many gun safety issues, most recently on his legislation to strengthen the state assault weapons ban which was included in the landmark NY SAFE Act signed into law earlier this year.”
Although the mayor’s and comptroller’s races have been hogging most of the media spotlight, the rhetoric in the tight race to become the city’s next public advocate has been sharply escalating in recent days. A third candidate, Reshma Saujani has waded in to the fray, criticizing the man she often refers to as “Trust Fund Dan” of “whining” about being the victim of a Ponzi scheme.
Educator Cathy Guerriero has also been mounting an aggressive campaign for the seat.

In the campaign for Public Advocate, only one candidate has the record of standing up for everyday people, and getting results – Letitia James. Councilwoman James has passed the Safe Housing Act, a sweeping law to help tenants get apartment repairs; she has delivered affordable housing for working people; and taken on powerful interests on behalf of everyday New Yorkers.
But State Senator Dan Squadron wants to deceive voters into thinking he is anything more than an ineffective legislator. So we fact-checked his latest ad falsely claiming Squadron gets “results.”
“In the battle against illegal guns, Daniel Squadron is a leader who gets results”
FACT: As an Albany legislator, Squadron has NEVER passed even a single piece of gun legislation into law. In fact, over the past two years as a failed Albany politician, Squadron has passed a total of zero (0) bills into law.
“(Squadron) voted to ban high capacity magazines and require background checks”
FACT: Legislation the Squadron campaign is taking credit for was sponsored by Senator Jeff Klein and advanced by Governor Cuomo. He was one of 43 Albany Senators to vote for it.
New Yorkers deserve a Public Advocate who has the experience and ability to deliver results for working people. Not another Albany politician preening his feathers.
