Jimmy Heath, 86, is one of the world’s greatest jazz saxophonists—and one of the last original purveyors of bebop. Who better to pay tribute to the irreplaceable musician known as Bird at this weekend’s Charlie Parker Jazz Festival? On Friday night in Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem, Mr. Heath unveils a new suite called “Bird Is the Word” in concert with his fine big band. The festival continues through Sunday, featuring esteemed musicians old and new, including the excellent alto saxophonists Kenny Garrett, Jaleel Shaw and veteran Lee Konitz, the refined young vocalist Cécile Mclorin Salvant and the immaculate pianist Aaron Diehl. Expect a happy, swinging crowd.
Marcus Garvey Park, 7:30pm-9pm, free, seating is first-come, first-served.
