After a grueling campaign season, mayor-elect Bill de Blasio is planning a little downtime with his wife.

Mr. de Blasio told reporters today that he’s on his way to  San Juan, Puerto Rico for the annual Somos El Futuro Fall Conference–but will stick around the sunny locale for a couple of extra days for some relaxation afterwards.

Mr. de Blasio said the trip, an annual meeting of Latino leaders from across the city and state, will provide an important opportunity to connect with community leaders. The summit’s schedule includes numerous roundtable and panel discussions about hot-button issues, along with golf tournaments and poolside receptions.

“I have participated for many years. I look forward to speaking at the conference, I look forward to meeting with senior Puerto Rican leaders,” said Mr. de Blasio, describing the close ties between the territory and the city.

“And then there’s gonna be a shocking development that Chirlane and I call ‘downtime.’ We’ve heard about this thing. We don’t know what it looks like. It’s been described to us,” he joked. “But for a couple of days, after a long, long battle, Chirlane and I are going to take a few days just to spend some quiet time, spend some time to think and re-group. And I think that’s necessary.”

Mr. de Blasio has long said that–unlike the current mayor, who frequently weekends in the Bermudas–he plans to avoid off-time outside of the five boroughs. Nonetheless, the trip means that Mr. de Blasio’s first vacation as mayor-elect will be out of state.
