Mayor Bill de Blasio is pumped over Melissa Mark-Viverito’s victory in the City Council speaker’s race earlier today.
“I think she’s going to be a great speaker of the City Council,” declared Mr. de Blasio, speaking to reporters after attending Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s State of the State address in Albany.
The new mayor, who prominently backed Ms. Mark-Viverito’s bid and is said by many to have been instrumental in her win, went on to praise the new speaker’s personal traits.
“She is a tremendously intelligent, purposeful, good human being. She has got a real heart. She cares deeply for the people of this city,” he declared. “If you get to know her, you see the keen intelligence, the energy, the urgency she brings to her work.”
Ms. Mark Viverito herself was one of Mr. de Blasio’s earliest supporters in the mayor’s race. But, Mr. de Blasio cautioned today that he did not expect the new speaker to be his puppet. (Ms. Mark-Viverito also stressed her independence after her victory. )
“I think she’s going to be a great partner in government. Now if you know Melissa, you also know she is a very independent person. And I think we’re going to agree on a lot of things because we have a very similar philosophy but there will be times that we disagree. And I know she will fight energetically for what she believes is right,” he argued.
“I’m very excited for her. I think she’s going to be a fantastic speaker of the City Council,” Mr. de Blasio said. “I’m just really looking forward to working for her.”
