I haven’t seen it yet, so all I can tell you is that “WOW is an experimental opera based on the spectacular rise and fall of the German pop duo Milli Vanilli.” Isn’t that enough?! For the libretto, poet Christan Hawkey uses remixed, pirated and appropriated language to tell the tortured history of the greatest band in history in an “experimental and nonlinear” way, according to early materials from the Watermill Center. Debuting tonight in New York, the show promises to explore race, nationality and sexuality, as well as the connection between technology and song, and will include clips from promotional videos. A related gallery exhibition by Merkx & Gwynne will also be on view.
