Chocolate may be a clichéd Valentine’s Day gift, but that doesn’t make it less delicious—or fascinating. Did you know chocolate was once touted as a health food? Learn about the sweet treat’s storied history in “America’s Romance with Chocolate: A Sweet Social History,” a talk by culinary historian Cathy Kaufman, then taste handmade chocolate truffles by chef Wai Hon Chu, paired with wine, in the museum’s period kitchen. Tickets benefit the Historic Furnishings Plan restoration.

Merchant’s House Museum, 29 East Fourth Street, 212-777-1089, 6:30 p.m., $40 each, $75 per couple.
