Congressman Charlie Rangel, who is facing a serious challenge in this year’s Democratic primary, is hoping to energize his supporters by highlighting alleged attacks from Fox News.

In a new fund-raising email sent out earlier this afternoon, the octogenarian congressman’s campaign declared that “Fox News is going after Charlie Rangel.”

“Last week, disgraced Republican and former Congressman Allen West called Charlie Rangel ‘stupid’ on Fox News, because he stood up to Republican attacks on our President. Rush Limbaugh regularly attacks Rangel on his show. The Tea Party can’t stand him,” reads the email, which also highlights other attacks.

Mr. Limbaugh, the right-wing radio show host, is not part of Fox News, but Mr. West, a conservative former Florida pol, did indeed criticize Mr. Rangel on Fox for linking the Tea Party to the confederacy. “I would say that his comments reflect a gentleman that’s stuck on stupid,” Mr. West said, speaking during a Greta Van Susteren interview that largely focused on Mr. Rangel.

Mr. Rangel’s campaign–which did not provide additional examples of Mr. Rangel being criticized on-air by Fox–argued that the incoming fire is the result of the veteran Harlem pol’s effectiveness in Washington.

“There’s an election coming up and Tea Party Republicans would like nothing more than to end Charlie Rangel’s career. You can bet that Rush Limbaugh and Fox News will be spending a lot of time talking about Charlie Rangel,” the fund-raising email continued. “But you can make the difference. Friend, will you help Charlie Rangel repel Republican attacks?”

Mr. Rangel faces three opponents in the Democratic primary: State Senator Adriano Espaillat, Pastor Mike Walrond and Bronx activist Yolanda Garcia.

Fox News is going after Charlie Rangel

Friend,

Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and the Tea Party Republicans are going after Charlie Rangel. They’re frustrated that Obamacare is working and the economy is growing, albeit slowly, and so rather than constructively working with President Obama, they’re lashing out.

Last week, disgraced Republican and former Congressman Allen West called Charlie Rangel “stupid” on Fox News, because he stood up to Republican attacks on our President. Rush Limbaugh regularly attacks Rangel on his show. The Tea Party can’t stand him.

Why? Because Charlie Rangel stands up for our values.

The Tea Party can’t tolerate anyone who will stand up for us and our values. And that’s what Charlie Rangel has been doing. Whether it’s fighting to raise the minimum wage, working for affordable housing, or getting Obamacare through Congress, Charlie Rangel has been our voice.

And he’s been successful at it, too. He’s been recognized as the most productive member of Congress, having passed more laws over the last ten years than anyone else. And they’ve been laws that have gotten results for us, like the Affordable Care Act, like the Low Income Housing Tax Credit, like the last minimum wage increase.

When you think about it that way, it’s no surprise that Republicans don’t like Charlie Rangel.

But he’s going to need your help to fight back.

There’s an election coming up and Tea Party Republicans would like nothing more than to end Charlie Rangel’s career. You can bet that Rush Limbaugh and Fox News will be spending a lot of time talking about Charlie Rangel. And if it’s anything like last time, there’ll be GOP SuperPACs going after him, too.

But you can make the difference. Friend, will you help Charlie Rangel repel Republican attacks?

Thank you,
Rangel for Congress
