Oliver backs Baraka for Mayor of Newark

NEWARK – Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver (D-34), the former Speaker of the General Assembly, this morning endorsed Ras Baraka in the Newark mayor’s race.

“I feel that the Baraka campaign has reflected the ideology of those who want to make change,” said Oliver. “There have been voices from outside of Newark in this race who have not reflected that ideology.”

Oliver said she still supports Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo and his re-election bid.

“I am what you call a deliberative, critical thinker, and I began to become one here in Newark when I was in public schools here,” Oliver said. “Newark is the third oldest city in the United States and we’re still standing but we haven’t invested in our human capital. Newark needs the type of leadership espoused by Ras Baraka.”
