Independent emerges in CD 12

The CD 12 primary may be over, but the general election for the left-leaning district is just beginning. And there’s a new candidate.

Ray Yelle announced Wednesday he’s running as an Independent to succeed outgoing U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (D-12). The announcement comes a day after Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson Coleman secured the Democratic Party’s nomination to succeed Holt.

“When Rush Holt announced his retirement, I looked at the primary candidates from both Democratic and Republican parties and was disappointed,” Yelle said in a statement. “All of these people are intelligent and capable, but their platforms are tailored to party agendas and big donors instead of the residents in Mercer, Middlesex, Somerset and Union counties. This may be a ‘blue’ district, but our next representative in the House has to represent all the people and their interests.”

Yelle, a technologist, will head into the general election with Watson Coleman and Republican Dr. Alieta Eck.
