Rest in Peace: Eva Christine Conaway

The Conaways this week are mourning the death of the Assemblyman’s mother, Eva Christine Conaway.

The daughter of late Perlie D. Godard and late Eva Viola Godard, Mrs. Conaway was born on August 12, 1938 in Martin County, North Carolina.  After a long and valiant struggle from Alzheimer’s, she was called to glory on July 24, 2014 at her home in Bordentown.

She attended Martin County Public Schools and graduated from P.S. Jones High School in Washington, North Carolina in 1956.  She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Winston-Salem Teachers College on May 24, 1960.  She obtained her nursing license of the State of North Carolina on December 16, 1960.  She worked for over 30 years at St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, New Jersey.  She was a devoted nurse who was highly respected in her role as nursing supervisor.  She retired in 2000.

On April 22, 1962, she married Herbert C. Conaway, Sr.  to whom she was a devoted wife. Through this union she had four children. She had three siblings who preceded her in death, Verona Pearl Godard, Zene Grey Godard and Mae James Godard. She had one brother-in-law Samuel Conaway who also preceded her death.

She was a member of the Church of Christ in Trenton. She has been a member for 16 years.  She will be remembered as a gracious, intelligent, faithful, tender and most selfless person by all. Among her favorite pastimes were caring for her family and reading romance novels.

She leaves to cherish her memory: four children, Dr. Herbert C. Conaway, Jr. of Moorestown, New Jersey, Ann Renee Wair of Bordentown, NJ, Andrea Christine Conaway of Bordentown, New Jersey and Michelle Lee Conaway of Jersey City, New Jersey; two siblings, Oliver James (Allie) of Williamston, N.C., and Rudolph James (Laura) of Portsmouth, VA; five in-laws, Earl and Claudine Conaway of Burlington, NJ, Janet Conaway of Fieldsboro, NJ and Georgianna Smith of Philadelphia, PA; eight grandchildren, Naomi Wair (Wes Tagoe), Ishod Wair, Nitocris Wair, Alexandra Conaway, Clark Conaway, Aiden Kennedy and Addison Kennedy; two great grandchildren, Cecilia and Eva Tagoe and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
