Streaming Shots Fired: HBO to Offer Netflix-Like Internet-Only Subscription

HBOReason No. 427 to just cancel your cable subscription and live on your computer came today: HBO will officially be offering a separate subscription service excusively over the Internet in 2015. Currently only available through cable and satellite, this deal will no doubt draw comparisons to streaming mega-giant overlord Netflix.

“It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO,” HBO CEO Richard Plepler said at an investors event held by HBO’s parent company, Time Warner. “So, in 2015, we will launch a stand-alone, over-the-top HBO service in the United States.”

Plepler did not delve into specifics on this new service, but did emphasize that HBO will continue to work with its cable and satellite providers, with the internet option providing a new and revolutionary opportunity for growth.

“We will work with our current partners, and we will explore models with new partners,” Piepler said. “All in all, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO, and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them.”

No word on how this will affect the underground HBOGO password sharing black market.
