According to the city’s top interior designers, belt-tightening, luxury homeowners are splashing out on one-offs to jazz up the Crate & Barrel these days. Ideal for deflecting attention from the mass-prod sofa is the Mercer table, by Brooklyn makers Hellman-Chang. From their Bushwick studio, Eric Chang and Daniel Hellman (both 32) handcraft their pieces from locally-sourced materials. Their bold, sleek designs can be spotted as far afield as The Cosmopolitan Hotel, Las Vegas and closer to home at the Waldorf Astoria and the Four Seasons.
Bachelor pads or family sitting rooms will be glamorized in an instant by this strong, sexy piece. The Mercer’s glass top seemingly floats above the espresso-cocoa-colored walnut and brass base. Several current trends are happening within the piece, too. Natural wood, warm metal tones and light-reflecting glass combine for a stunning effect. Each table can be custom-made using different colored materials and quite honestly, throw a few cushions around it and voila! Job done in the living room.
