Hillary Clinton: First Victim in the Democratic Civil War?

I am groping for an historical analogy to the ideological civil war that now engulfs the Democratic Party and threatens to
eviscerate the presidential candidacy of Hillary Clinton. Is this the Democratic Party version of the French Revolution, the left-wing European revolutions of 1848, the Russian Revolution of 1917 – or all three?

There is no doubt as to who is pushing in the media the two major controversies surrounding Hillary Clinton, namely 1) her use of a private email account for State Department business; and 2) the acceptance by the Clinton Foundation of donations from regimes with poor human rights records, particularly on women’s rights. It is the left-wing ideologues of the Democratic Party, rather than their right wing Republican counterparts, who are seizing the opportunity provided by these stories to deny Hillary Clinton the
nomination and win the same for their preferred candidate, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

Lest you doubt me, watch the present coverage of the Clinton controversies on MSNBC and compare it with the coverage by the Fox News Channel.

On MSNBC, you can see the left-wing Montagnards of the Democratic Party working feverishly to use the political guillotine against the avatar of the center-left of the Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton. On Fox, you see conservative journalists calmly covering the story, although they must try hard to conceal their glee at the destruction of the candidacy of the only Democrat who can win the White House in 2016, Hillary Clinton.

The irony is that while Hillary is responsible for her glaring error of judgment in using a private email account for State Department business, that misuse is not criminal and would not in itself unmake her status as the front runner for the Democratic Party 2016 presidential nomination. Rather, it is the acceptance by the Clinton Foundation of money from unsavory foreign sources, for which Bill Clinton, and not Hillary Clinton is responsible, that threatens to undo her presidential candidacy. Bill Clinton’s recent hire of former Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala as CEO of the Clinton Foundation is too little and too late to repair
the damage.

If Hillary is forced to withdraw from the race, the Democratic Party Montagnards, aided and abetted by the forces of MoveOn.Org and George Soros will succeed in winning the nomination for their knight in shining left-wing armor, Elizabeth Warren.

The other potential Democratic presidential candidates will offer scant resistance to the Warren candidacy. The ineffectual Joe Biden makes Dan Quayle look like Thomas Jefferson. Governor Martin O’Malley of Maryland is not ready for national prime time and will run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Barbara Mikulski. The center-left of the Democratic Party will rally behind Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia. As I have written previously, Tim Kaine would make an ideal vice presidential running mate for Hillary
Clinton because of his potential to hold for her the Battleground State of Virginia. As a presidential candidate, Tim Kaine reminds me of the late coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Landry – a national cure for insomnia.

Warren will defeat him easily.

Elizabeth Warren is too left-wing to win the White House. If Hillary falls and Elizabeth Warren becomes the Democratic 2016 presidential nominee, Republicans can make their reservations for the January 20, 2017 inauguration of either President Scott Walker or President Jeb Bush.

Alan J. Steinberg served as Regional Administrator of Region 2 EPA during the administration of former President George W. Bush, and as Executive Director of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission under former New Jersey Governor Christie Whitman.
