Flying solo tonight, Gill throws successful fundraising party in Essex

A stoutly attentive Essex County Democratic Chairman Leroy Gill, right, kept Gill at arm's length tonight.

A stoutly attentive Essex County Democratic Chairman Leroy Gill, right, stands with Gill.

Consummate deft-fingered Essex County Freeholder Brendan Gill of Montclair pulled in a big crowd tonight at a fundraiser crammed with Essex types.

He raised over $40,000 tonight at his cocktail reception at Fresco in Montclair. Those in attendance included Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo, state Senator Teresa Ruiz, Newark Councilman Anibal Ramos, East Orange Mayor Lester Taylor, Gill’s colleagues on the Freeholder Board, the Bloomfield Mayor and Council, the Bellevillle Council, Cedar Grove Mayor and Council and the Mayor of Montclair and the entire council.

Certainly more than a few sets of eyeballs rolled around the room in search of former U.S. Ambassador to Germany Phil Murphy, expecting to find Gill’s Drumthwacket-seeking client microphone-ready.

If Murphy was there he was in disguise.

“This was all about him [Gill],” an Essex source told PolitickerNJ. “Solid crowd, packed. Certainly being vice chair and at-large has raised his profile. …First event since vice chair and at-large.”

Can Gill singlehandedly make Murphy, PolitickerNj asked the source.

“Certainly has done a lot for him but, in short, no,” said the source.

Can Murphy bury Gill, PolitickerNJ tried.

“No,” the source said. “Brendan liked and talented.”
