U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) spoke out against Republicans’ “Stop Sanctuary Policies and Protect Americans Act” on the Senate floor Tuesday, calling the so-called “Donald Trump Act” anti-immigrant.
“We are witnessing the most overtly nativist and xenophobic campaign in modern U.S. history,” said Menendez during his speech. “We’ve hit a new low with the extraordinarily hateful rhetoric that diminishes immigrants’ contributions to American history — and particularly demonizes the Latino community by labeling Mexican immigrants as rapists and criminals.”
The bill would eliminate the ability of cities to opt out of reporting undocumented immigrants to federal authorities for deportation. Democrats are likely to keep the vote from getting the 60 votes it would need to pass.
