Having opposed Senate President Steve Sweeney’s (D-3) senate alternative, veteran Senator Ronald L. Rice (D-28) of Newark today said he supports Speaker Vincent Prieto’s (D-32) Atlantic City state takeover bill.
“From day one, I believe there are some serious constitutional issues,” Rice said. “We shouldn’t be taking away from elected officials’ right to govern. The legislation the senate put up interferes with those rights.
“The speaker is correct,” the senator added. “It protects the statutory and constitutional authority of local elected officials, much more than the other bill. The Sweeney/Greenwald bill says ‘we’re going to put our own rubber stamp people in charge,’ and the Prieto bill doesn’t do that. Sweeney’s bill is really another step toward union busting, put forward by union officials. Only in New Jersey.”
