Atlantic City NAACP President Betty J. Lewis this afternoon issued a statement from the organization in support of Speaker Vincent Prieto’s (D-32) Atlantic City state takeover bill, which is due before the Assembly on Thursday.

“The takeover legislation that the Governor and Senate President are trying to pass has many serious deficiencies that should concern anyone who is in favor of workers and union rights, but perhaps the most troubling aspect of it is the total disenfranchisement of the residents of Atlantic City, many of whom are African American,” Lewis said in a statement. “We have seen what happens when people of color are denied the right to elect their own leaders or have a say in the future of their communities, from the failed state takeovers of other New Jersey cities and school districts to the disaster in Flint that has poisoned thousands of children.

“Our members are calling on the State Assembly and especially members of the Legislative Black Caucus to reject any bill that disenfranchises Atlantic City residents and to support Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto’s compromise legislation that will give the city a change to recover from its financial difficulties without trampling on our democratic rights,” the organization president added.
