There is sad news to report tonight out of Hudson County.

Longtime Democratic Party political operative Harold “Buddy” Demellier has died.

Mr. Demellier was mostly known as a backroom mechanic for the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO), and most notably in recent years as a key get out the vote generator for former Jersey City Mayor Jerry Healy.

The “Last of the Mohicans,” in the words of fellow operative Tom Bertoli, Mr. Demellier died after suffering a heart attack. He got his start in  politics in North Bergen, and later served as chief of staff to Jersey City Mayor Gerry McCann.

“He was one of a kind,” Bertoli said of Demellier, who was often on the other side of the fighting.
