GOP Leader Ciattarelli Condemns Trump for Mexican Judge Remarks

Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli (R-16) condemned comments by presumptive GOP Prez nominee Donald Trump this afternoon after asked by PolitickerNJ about Trump’s accusations against a judge of Mexican heritage.

“Trump’s comments on the Mexican-American Judge and his calling a journalist a ‘sleaze’ are appalling,” Ciattarelli said. “In deploying the old and tired tactic of demonizing the judiciary and the press, Trump doesn’t adhere to any code of conduct, which is what many find appealing. The challenge is, as a Presidential candidate, he needs to appeal to a majority of Americans to win the general election.  The concern is, as the standard-bearer for the Republican party, he may ultimately do the GOP irreparable harm.
Fellow Republicans – including former Speaker Newt Gingrich and sitting Speaker Paul Ryan – continue to fret over Trump’s accusation that District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is overseeing a lawsuit involving Trump University, is biased because of his Mexican heritage. Ciattarelli is a likely 2017 candidate for governor who for the past year has put distance on sitting GOP Governor Chris Christie, an early Trump backer.
