There are times in life when you give less than 100 percent. We can all admit that, right? It’s impossible to give all the shits, all the time, about all the things; we would literally go mad from the effort, like Maria Bamford in Lady Dynamite. (“Corn!”) If you did your best all the time, than we wouldn’t be measuring output in percentages in the first place. Most days, even on the best ones, we walk around like smug, shitty Mark Zuckerbergs in The Social Network, giving the opposition’s counsel (or in this case, “life,”) part of our full attention…the minimal amount.
But then there are days when we just GO FOR IT, and are able to rise to the high-pressure challenges that the world throws at us. Like Tahani, the 12-year-old girl who performed her dance routine to Beyonce’s “Breakdown” so hard on Monday night’s So You Think You Can Dance? that she literally threw up on Paula Abdul after her set. And guess what? SHE STILL GOT HER TICKET TO HOLLYWOOD (OR WHATEVER, I DON’T WATCH THIS SHOW)!
So this is just a gentle reminder: sometimes giving it your all means publicly mortifying yourself. But in the case of Tahani, it also made for really great television, an instant viral hit and will probably end up ultimately helping her with the judges and audience. I mean, who hasn’t wanted to throw up on Paula Abdul? We’ve all seen that Bruno clip, after all.
